Staples-Motley Cardinal Football: A Story of Leadership, Community, Belief, and Teamwork

If you’ve recently passed through Staples, Minnesota, it’s hard to miss the unmistakable pride and unity centered around one thing: the Staples-Motley High School football team. There’s something undeniably special about     small-town football. When a team is not only on a winning streak but also composed of young men of strong character, guided by dedicated coaches, and backed by supportive school leadership and an enthusiastic community, it brings people together in a way few things can.

So, what’s behind their success? As with most great achievements, there isn’t a single answer. It’s the result of many factors coming together—and the impact has been remarkable.

  1. Strong Leadership on the Sidelines

Every successful team needs a dedicated leader, and the Staples-Motley Cardinals are no exception. Drew Potter, and the entire coaching staff have embraced strategies that highlight the strengths of each individual player, while fostering a culture of discipline and true teamwork. Not only have they blended traditional football fundamentals with modern techniques, but they have also developed a culture within the team that emphasizes hard work, strong character, and a “team first” mentality.

  1. Player Commitment

The players themselves are at the heart of this success story. Their commitment to rigorous training, teamwork, and continuous improvement has been pivotal. Staples-Motley athletes aren’t just playing football; they’re representing a town that takes pride in its youth and their achievements. They understand the magic that they are creating, and they do not take it for granted.

These are young men with incredible work ethic, great relationships, and deep commitment to their teammates. The players’ belief in themselves and each other has become a driving force, turning dreams of championships into tangible goals.

  1. Community Support

Equally important is the unwavering support of the community. Local businesses sponsor the team, parents organize booster events, and fans pack the stands on game nights. Businesses closed their doors early because everyone wanted to go cheer on the cardinals. Everywhere you look around town, you will see letter boards and signs in the windows with messages to encourage the cardinals.

This small-town enthusiasm creates an absolutely electric atmosphere that energizes the players and brings this entire community together through a shared passion and love for Cardinal football.

The coaches and players play a vital role as community supporters. On the night before the state championship game, the football team filled the first two rows at the school musical, enthusiastically cheering on their classmates. Meanwhile, those who couldn’t attend the play showed up in the stands for the girls’ basketball home opener. These players and coaches deeply value the support they receive from the community and make it a priority to give that same support back to others.

  1. Administrative and Leadership Support

Leadership shapes the foundation of any community, and in the Staples-Motley School District, those at the forefront are driving the priorities outlined in the school’s Continuous Improvement Plans (CIP), spearheaded by Superintendent Shane Tappe. Core values such as excellence, respect, pride, relationships, and integrity guide these efforts. Evidence of these values in action includes the Staples-Motley student section receiving praise from U.S. Bank Stadium staff for their respectful conduct during state playoff games.

Another notable initiative is the student leadership council, introduced by Athletic Director Josh Lee. This council brings together student leaders from various programs for monthly before-school sessions focused on leadership training and activities. These students recognize the vital role they play within the school and serve as exemplary role models for their peers.

  1. Youth Development and Feeder Programs

The foundation of the Cardinals’ success has been built over years, thanks to strong youth football programs. Staples-Motley’s focus on developing skills at the elementary and middle school levels ensures a steady pipeline of talented, well-coached athletes ready to compete at the high school level. These programs don’t just teach the X’s and O’s—they also instill the values of hard work, sportsmanship, and resilience.

  1. Focus on Holistic Growth

What sets this team apart is their emphasis on growth beyond the field. Coaches and educators alike emphasize academics, leadership, and community involvement. Many of the team’s players are leaders in other school activities and embody the spirit of what it means to be a well-rounded student-athlete.

These young men shine in every arena—on the basketball court, hockey rink, wrestling mat, speech team, in the band and orchestra, singing with the choir, and performing on stage in the school musical. They’re empowered to explore their talents and interests, and their well-rounded pursuits shape their character, strengthen their work ethic, and drive their excellence.
